The spark
A city is alive. We wanted to give that aliveness a body — a form that inhales and exhales with the world outside.
Live data sculpture · real-time city pulse
A living 3D sculpture that breathes, sings, and transforms in real time with traffic, air, weather, and the collective hum of a city.
Why?
We built The City Breathes because cities are almost always shown as numbers — a dashboard of metrics, a forecast, a chart. But a city is not a spreadsheet; it is a living system with a pulse. The spark was a simple question: what if you could feel a place instead of reading it? What if its air, traffic, weather, and collective hum became something you could watch breathe and hear sing?
The inspiration came from the quiet truth that we rarely notice how the environment actually feels until it is extreme. A clear morning and a smog-heavy evening are worlds apart, yet both collapse into a single index. By turning conditions into color, motion, and sound, the sculpture makes those differences viscerally obvious — you don’t read that the air is stressed, you watch the form redden, distort, and darken.
A city is alive. We wanted to give that aliveness a body — a form that inhales and exhales with the world outside.
Raising awareness for how the environment feels: air quality and weather become something you sense, not just a percentage you scroll past.
Art that only exists when connected to real systems — interactive, networked, and impossible without technology.
Seeing a distant city breathe builds quiet empathy — a reminder we share one atmosphere, one rhythm.
Concept
Cities are usually shown as maps and dashboards. The City Breathes turns the invisible systems of urban life into a living organism: traffic sets its rhythm, air quality colors its skin, weather moves its surface, and social activity makes it shimmer and sing. It is a new medium that could not exist without technology — interactive, networked, and evolving every second.
Touch or click the sculpture to change how it breathes. The viewer becomes a participant.
Live public signals directly shape geometry, color, light, and sound in real time.
The form is generated by rules, not fixed frames — every moment is unique.
The sculpture changes across minutes, hours, and days with the world outside.
Features
How it works
| Data | Visual effect | Sound |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic | Breathing rate (7–20 bpm), rotation speed | Breath LFO, filter cutoff |
| Air quality | Surface roughness, darkening, red strain, tremor | Detuned dissonance, grit |
| Wind | Flowing, travelling surface waves | Particle sweep |
| Rain | Softer, cooler light; wetter sheen; haze | Soft noise wash |
| Temperature | Warm ↔ cool color and fill light | Drone pitch base |
Experience
Adjust the controls on the right, click the sculpture to shift its breath, and enable sound to hear the data sing. It works with or without a live connection.
